PCBL + Tech Course at UEN
Daily Resource / February 1st, 2023
Last year at this time, I was working on developing a course for Utah Education Network. The course was, and still is, a passion project for me. A few years ago, I was asked to join the Personalized, Competency-Based Learning advisory committee at the Utah State Board of Education as the teacher of record. I was flattered and excited to be asked, but also I was just learning about PCBL and had to quickly develop an understanding of PCBL and how it changes education almost at a fundamental level. In 2022, I ran a webinar series with Utah tech and thought leaders on PCBL to explore how technology tools common in Utah schools could be utilized to explore PCBL as a strategy in our classrooms. The series culminated in the launch of this course.
Now, almost a year later, dozens of teachers have taken the free course, and many of them have explored how PCBL can be used in their learning environments to develop their students’ learning and agency within that learning. Dany recently finished the course and posted this image on social media of her final project, a reimagining of a Portrait of a Graduate, but with an ELA spin. Seeing her work, along with dozens of other Portraits, makes me rediscover my passion for PCBL every time. If you are a Utah educator and are interested in PCBL, you can take this course for free through UEN. If you are outside Utah and would like to learn more about the course, please feel free to contact me through my email - matt@teacherwinters.net
